A Higher National Certificates is a higher education or a post-secondary education qualification sometimes called as territory education or third-level education in the United Kingdom. Higher National Certificates (HNC) is equivalent to university bachelor’s degree and awarded by Scottish Qualifications Authority.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, an HNC (previously a level 5 qualification) is now Level 4 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework.
The HNC is a BTEC qualification granted by Edexcel and in Scotland.
Ireland, an HNC is considered roughly equivalent to a FETAC level 6 Advanced Certificate – as both contain at least 8 modules/units at IRL level 6 (UK level 4)
In Scotland, an HNC is Level 7 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework.
HNC is a full-time one year 120 credits program and requires Level 3 qualification at least. Grade boundaries is categorized under following mentioned:
- Distinction- 70% and above
- Merit- 60-69%
- Pass- 40-59%

A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a higher education or a post-secondary education qualification in the United Kingdom. HND is two-year Level 5 work-related program and equivalent to first two year of Honours Degree of BA/BSc study.
HND is normally more extensive and academically harder than the HNC and evaluated usually based on a weighted average. After completion HND program successfully many HNDs are allowed to get enrolled directly to the third year of an Honours Degree program.
